Historic Plaque Dedication at Linwood Pioneer Cemetery @ Linwood Pioneer Cemetery
The Leawood Historic Commission dedicates a bronze plaque commemorating the Linwood Pioneer Cemetery at Ranch Mart. Linwood Pioneer Cemetery burials predate 1873 with the final burials in 2000 and 2004 of Vic and Helen Regnier, developers of Ranch Mart Shopping Center. According to church records, in 1882 there were 48 burial lots on the west side of the church and 72 lots on the east; today a small portion of the cemetery remains. This land was part of 640 acres first deeded to the heirs of Doctor Grey Eyes, a Wyandot Indian, in 1858 by President Buchanan. Simeon W. Peeples purchased 80 acres in June of 1873 and sold two acres to the Methodist Episcopal Church for use as a church and cemetery. A wood frame church stood on the site for nearly 50 years. Join the Leawood Historic Commission, members of the Leawood Sagamore Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Mayor Marc Elkins for the ceremony. Following the dedication, attendees will walk among the headstones and hear presentations by members of the DAR about the people resting in the cemetery. Light refreshments will be provided. Held on All Saints’ Day and Day of the Dead, a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2. Free. Contact April Bishop at aprilbishop8686@gmail.com.
