Minnie Mae Day (Inaugural) @ Downtown Lexington

Minnie Mae Day honors the extraordinary legacy of Minnie Mae Talbert, who was sworn in as Sheriff of Lexington, Missouri on June 10, 1919 — before women could vote, before equality was law — making her the first elected female Sheriff in the United States of America. This inaugural annual celebration honors that historic moment and uses it to ignite a day-long celebration of women’s courage, leadership, creativity, and legacy. The day features a historic swearing-in ceremony with an actress portraying Minnie Mae, female speakers and leaders from law enforcement, history, arts, and community, a Junior Deputy Swearing-In empowering the next generation of girls and boys, and a powerful Remembrance Wall where women and girls leave notes to Minnie, to mothers, daughters, mentors, or to themselves. An evening concert features bands and performers with female lead singers, celebrating women’s voices through music. Activities from 11 AM to 4 PM include the 10th Street Farmer’s Market, shopping, dining, guided trolley tours, museums, and the Battle of Lexington Historic Site. What begins as a single day will live on as a permanent museum exhibit in Lexington, preserving the voices, messages, and stories collected. Located at Downtown Lexington, 10th Street between Main and Franklin.
