The Furrever Tree in Loose Park debuted 2024, gathering 74 mementos of beloved pets who passed away during the year. Kansas City Parks and Recreation staff and volunteers preserved and stored the ornaments.
On December 6 at the “Santa Paws in the Park” event, a new six-foot tree appeared complete with last year’s decorations. Volunteers from Rockhurst University assisted attendees with creating and hanging new ornaments to remember their pets.
Toni Zibert with Kansas City Parks and Recreation said there were “many misty eyes, and sweet smiles. Some attendees returned from last year’s event to see their pet adorning the tree once more.”
There are currently only dogs and cats on the Furrever tree, but Zibert says that reptiles, ferrets, fish and larger animals like horses are welcome to be remembered. The tree is modeled after a similar tradition in New York City’s Central Park.
“It’s a precious and heartfelt memorial that we hope to keep bringing back year after year.”
The Furrever Tree display continues through January 1, 2026 in front of the Loose Park Garden Center. Visitors may add ornaments remembering their pets during this time. Learn more at kcparks.org.
