Spring Cleanups scheduled for 6th and 5th districts

Two big annual spring cleanups with six drop-off sites in south Kansas City altogether will be conducted from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, May 14 and 21, and all KCMO residents are eligible to participate.

The 6th Council District Cleanup May 14 will have drop-off sites in the parking lots of Ruskin High School, 7000 E. 111th St., and South-Broadland Presbyterian Church, 7850 Holmes Rd.

Bulky items such as old furniture, leaves & brush, tires and trash will be accepted at both sites and free document shredding also will be available.

At the Ruskin site, unwanted household items in good condition and working order also will be accepted for no charge.  These items will be donated to area Red Racks Thrift Stores operated by the Disabled American Veterans.

Gently used items accepted include small appliances such as blenders and microwaves, books, clothing, small electronic items, furniture, kitchenware such as dishes and pots & pans, linens, musical instruments but no pianos or organs, shoes, sports equipment, tools, toys and TVs with flat fronts and backs.

Electronic items that don’t have to be in working order also will be accepted at the Ruskin site to allow recycling of their parts, but there will be cash charges of $5 for CRT monitors, $10 for any items containing Freon, $20 for LCD, LED/plasma TVs, $30 for CRT TVs 26 inches or less and $50 for CRT TVs 27 inches or more and wood console and big screen/projection TVs.  

The event is co-sponsored by 6th District City Council members Andrea Bough and Kevin McManus, Community Assistance Council and South Kansas City Alliance.

The 5th Council District Cleanup May 21 will have drop-off sites at Loma Vista Shopping Center, 8800 Blue Ridge Blvd., the Center Academy for Success, 8434 Paseo, the vacant land at 3001 E. 81st St., and Southeast High School, 3500 E. Meyer Blvd.

Only bulky items and trash will be accepted at the Loma Vista site.

Bulky items, leaves & brush, tires and trash will be accepted at the Center Academy for Success as well as glass and the same kind of gently used items accepted at the Ruskin site that will be donated to Red Racks Thrift Stores.

The 5th District event is sponsored by 5th District City Council members Lee Barnes, Jr., and Ryana Parks-Shaw and the City Public Works Department.

Neither of the cleanups will accept household hazardous waste such as automotive products, herbicides & pesticides and paint.  Hopefully, a hazardous waste collection event will be scheduled in south Kansas City later this year as has been done in recent years.
