Martin City will have to wait for Santa to light its Christmas tree this year.
The annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony planned for Thursday evening has been postponed due to rain.
“We don’t have a cover for the children’s choirs. It’s out in the open,” explains Martin City Community Improvement District Manager Vicker Wolverton.
She says a new date is forthcoming. “We will have to check with Santa,” says Wolverton.
The lighting ceremony was scheduled to begin at 5:45 pm Thursday with performances from the Martin City Music Makers, a group of 4th and 5th graders from Martin City K-8 School along with a choir of students from St. Thomas More school. At 6 pm, Santa was to appear, throw the switch to light up the streets of Martin City, listen to Christmas wishes and pose for photos.
This year’s event features a new Christmas tree and location. The new tree is a large evergreen tree outside George’s Import’s, 505 E 135th St.
The lighting ceremony, when rescheduled, offers a special self-guided Tour of Martin City for the kids who attend between 4 and 8 pm. They will stop by different Martin City businesses to get a special holiday treat, participate in special holiday activities, and get a Martin City passport stamped at each stop. Their fully stamped passports can then be redeemed for a free cup of hot chocolate near the holiday tree.

Grandview remains in the spirit
While the forecast of rain has changed plans for Martin City, Grandview’s Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is still a go.
“Ours is rain or shine,” says Valarie Poindexter, spokesperson for the City of Grandview.
That event is held at The View Community Center, 13500 Byars Rd., starting at 6 pm. School choirs and the reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas will be held inside the community center. Santa’s arrival by fire truck and flipping the switch will be held outdoors.
This year Dutch Bros. will provide free hot chocolate while the city hands out cookies at the event.
