Anthony Ealy Jr., who represents Grandview and Martin City in the state House, was arrested Wednesday in Jefferson City for verbal assault and disturbance of the peace. As of Friday morning, he remains in the Cole County jail with no bail.
The arrest occurred on Wednesday, Nov. 4, around 11:30 am after Jefferson City police responded to reports of Ealy yelling near his apartment complex and disrupting a funeral service next door. Witnesses say he was having “some sort of panic attack or mental health crisis” and reported he “said something about a gun” and threatened to kill the person who called the police, according to the police report. The witness said Ealy had been “screaming” the night before on Tuesday, election night. Ealy was arrested at his apartment nearby. He was charged for peace disturbance and assault in the 4th degree (the least serious assault charge in Missouri).
Ealy, a Democrat, had just won reelection to a third term in the Missouri House of Representatives. In a heavily Democratic district, he handedly beat his opponent Republican Dave Thomas in Tuesday’s election, 68% to 32%.
Unlike his first campaign for office in which Ealy knocked on “thousands of doors,” Ealy was noticeably absent this time. A single post on social media sites announced he was seeking reelection. There were no interviews. No returned messages. No forum appearances.
At a local town hall meeting in June the normally soft-spoken Ealy appeared to be out of character. “He was all balled up, stressed, using inappropriate language,” says one participant who wishes to remain anonymous.
Inappropriate behavior and comments had also surfaced during his 2026 term at the capitol, according to unnamed sources.
According to a statement from Marc Powers, Chief of Staff for the Minority Leader’s Office, “Rep. Ealy was removed from committees this spring so he could address his personal issues. There are no plans to restore his committee assignments for the upcoming session.”
It’s unclear whether Ealy sought treatment. But statistics show he participated 21% of the time during roll call during the spring session.
Ealy, at the age of 27, became youngest and first Black representative voted into the District 36 office.

A licensed attorney, Ealy served as a Judicial Intern for the 16th Circuit Court of Jackson County, as a Legislative Fellow for the Office of Congressman Emanuel Cleaver and as an Emerging Leaders Fellow for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. He became involved in several civic organizations. He graduated from Grandview High School and received his law degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
The baby-faced politician impressed voters when he first campaigned door to door, for his in-depth knowledge of the issues and outlined plans to improve the area. One of his key campaign issues was criminal justice reform where he would work to end the school-to-prison pipeline. In 2022 he beat the incumbent and ended his first term successfully, bringing $2 million in state funding to the area. In 2024 he was reelected.
In four years Ealy sponsored 81 bills and co-sponsored 57.
The future of Ealy’s seat remains unclear.
