Grandview VFW holds flag retirement ceremony and celebration of two WW II veterans

This weekend, VFW Post 8100 in Grandview will celebrate two of their oldest veterans as well hold a flag retirement ceremony.

On Friday, starting at 5 pm, a 98th birthday party will be held for World War II Navy veteran Richard Dziedzic. Dziedzic is one of the Post’s oldest members (and also a former employee of the Telegraph). A birthday cake and a small buffet of food will be included. Dziedzic plans to bring his framed Declaration of Independence display for viewing.

At 6 pm, VFW members will hold their annual flag retirement ceremony. US flags are required to be disposed of in a respectful manner. Under the U.S. Flag Code,  a flag is folded into a tight triangle and placed into a large, respectful fire until reduced to ash, often accompanied by a salute, the Pledge of Allegiance, or a moment of silence. The public is invited to dispose of flags at the event . “Taking your flag to the VFW is the correct way to dispose of them,” says VFW volunteer and President Annette Turnbough. The flags will be burned at a fire pit on the grounds of the VFW.

On Sunday, from 1 to 3 pm, the Post 8100 will celebrate the 101st birthday for World War II Navy veteran Ben Teevan. The event is open to the public and cake, food and refreshments will be available.
