KCMO municipal case review deadline, waste disposal events coming soon

A free free city-wide household hazardous waste drop-off for Kansas City residents with proper ID will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Burns & McDonnell office at 9400 Ward Pkwy.

Items accepted at the drop-off include automotive fluids such as antifreeze & motor oil, batteries, cooking oil, hazardous liquids, household cleaners, items containing mercury, lawn & garden products, light bulbs, paint, pesticides & insecticides, photographic chemicals, pool chemicals and used oil filters.

Register for KC-area municipal court case reviews by Friday, Sept. 18

People with outstanding warrants and unresolved cases from municipal courts in several Missouri cities in the metropolitan area can get free legal assistance to resolve them from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, October 2, at the Kansas City Municipal Court, 511 E. 11th St., but must register online at www.kcmo.gov/court by Friday, September 18, to participate.

Courts participating in the warrant and case review besides KCMO’s court include the municipal courts from Grandview, Lee’s Summit, Raytown & Riverside and the North Kansas City Municipal Court for warrant review only.  Also participating are the Jackson County Municipal Court (Division 301) and the Clay County Associate Circuit Court for traffic cases only.

The event also will include a free resource fair open to everyone with information regarding domestic violence assistance, education & vocational training, housing, job opportunities, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, utility assistance and veteran services.  No registration is required to participate.

KCMO below 63rd Street can soon get leaves, brush picked up

It’s not too early to begin making plans for the city’s two fall rounds of free curbside pickup of leaves & brush and grass & tree trimmings for all of KCMO south of 63rd St. and other parts of the city directly north and east of Raytown.

The first round of south zone pickups will be Monday through Friday, October 19-23, and the second round will be Monday through Friday, November 16-20.

Crews will pick up as many as 20 paper yard waste sacks and bundles of branches altogether, none of which may weigh more than 40 pounds.

If sealed, the sacks must be sealed with masking tape, not plastic or duct tape.

The branch bundles must not be more than two feet in diameter and not more than four feet long, and none of the branches may be more than three inches in diameter.  They must be bound by twine or rope, not plastic tape or wire.

All items must be within three feet of the street and at least four feet away from trash & recycling carts and must be set out no later than 7 a.m. on trash day and no earlier than 5 p.m. the day before.

Persons should wait until after 5 p.m. to report missed pickups but must report them no later than the next business day through myKCMO app.

5th District wide-variety waste drop-off set for Thursday, Oct. 10

The 5th Council District waste drop-off for all city residents with proper ID will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, October 10, with drop-off sites at four different locations that all accept different types of items.

The site at Ruskin High School, 7000 E. 111th St. in the rear parking lot where I always volunteer, will accept the widest variety of items including household hazardous waste, leaves & brush, tires with & without rims and trash & bulky items such as old furniture.  It will also accept electronics for recycling such as computers & networking equipment, copiers & printers, gaming equipment and phone systems.  There is a $5 charge for CRT monitors, a $20 charge for LCD TVs, a $30 charge for CRT TVs and a $50 charge for projection TVs.  It also provides on-site document shredding.

The site at the Center Academy for Success, 8434 Paseo, offers the same services as the Ruskin site except it will not accept household hazardous waste.

The site at Southeast High School, 3500 E. Meyer Blvd., will only accept leaves & brush, tires with & without rims and trash & bulky items, and the site at 8131 Indiana will only accept leaves & brush and trash.
