Despite a barrage of gunfire in many areas of the city after the Chiefs won the Super Bowl, fortunately the Kansas City Police Department reported no injuries from such gunfire.
When I called our area 911 call center to report such shots I first got a busy signal, and when I called back from my cell phone I was routed to a national emergency call center just as I was on New Year’s Eve.
Unlike New Year’s Eve, the national call center wasn’t inundated, and my call was answered promptly, but it took two calls for the national center to get through to our area center. The first time the national center transferred my call to the KCPD non-emergency line, and after it wasn’t answered for several minutes I had to call back when it was properly transferred and eventually answered.
KCPD’s ShotSpotter system which only covers parts of the central city recorded 52 activations with a total of 328 rounds fired from 5 p.m. February 11 to 5 a.m. February 12. During that same time period there were 65 calls recorded reporting shots fired in the city by callers who were able to get through to the area call center.
