Leawood residents decide on old city hall and fire station

The City of Leawood is taking the next step toward transforming the former City Hall and Fire Station #1 property at 96th Street and Lee Boulevard into a new public space for the community.

Following years of study and recent direction from the City Council, the City has submitted a preliminary site plan for the 3.69-acre parcel located at 9609 Lee Boulevard. The concept plan reimagines the site as a neighborhood amenity, featuring a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces designed for gathering, recreation, and community use.

Key elements of the proposal include:

• Demolition of the former City Hall building.
• Renovation and reuse of the former fire station as a multi-purpose community facility, including restrooms, a kitchenette, and a concessions area
• New outdoor features such as play amenities, walking trails, and a potential demonstration garden to encourage outdoor learning and activity.

A public meeting to review the preliminary plan was held November 5. A written summary of the meeting has been submitted to the City’s Planning Department which will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, November 25 at 6 pm at Leawood City Hall, 4800 Town Center Dr.

The Leawood governing body will consider the site plan on Monday, December 15.
