On Saturday, September 21, lightning struck the St. Thomas More School gym. Fire and smoke was discovered above the concession stand and the fire department responded. However the gym is off limits to students for now.
Ironically, St. Thomas More’s barbecue fundraiser, More Smoke, is coming to the rescue.
The Catholic parish’s annual More Smoke BBQ competition and event will be held on Friday, October 11 and Saturday, October 12 at St. Thomas More School, 118th and Holmes Road. Having been revived only last year after a short hiatus, the event is expected to have about 15 teams competing. Throughout the night the public can enjoy taste samples, live music, and beer for about $20. For $10 more ($30), they can add a Saturday morning pancake breakfast and Bloody Mary bar to their weekend enjoyment.
According to organizer Mindy Clark, More Smoke was initially intended to raise money for teacher bonuses but may also include repairing damage to the gym.
Barbecue teams are still welcome (must include a St. Thomas More parishioner and $175 registration). Call 913-205-8518 for more information or go to givebutter.com/2024STMBBQ.
