South Kansas Citians can be thankful for what the results of the ballot issues will bring their way. John Sharp explains why.

On November 3, the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri, voted unanimously in favor of a contested rezoning and development plan for Woodbridge Manor, a 152-lot single-family residential development which will rest on 54 acres of land located west of Jackson Avenue, about one-quarter mile north of E. Red Bridge Road. Approval of the plan came just one week after a public hearing took place at the Planning, Zoning & Economic Development Committee on Oct. 26, wherein neighborhood residents protested and urged City Council members to reconsider the proposal.

Each Saturday Querrey (rhymes with “worry”) hosts a wine tasting from noon to 3 p.m. Five wines are usually sampled, along with a “Mystery” wine. Cheese is provided for nibbling and baguette slices are served to help cleanse the palette.

With 13 separate issues on the ballot besides the candidate races and yes/no retention votes on 13 judges, the November 8 ballot in KCMO and Jackson County is the longest in my memory. Although a lot of money has been spent on advertising supporting or opposing many of these issues, some very important ones have barely been publicly discussed.

The transformation of the former Red Bridge bowling alley into a Euston’s Hardware store is in full swing. According to Kathy Euston, the hardware store will open in mid-January. While the construction crew is hard at it, Euston’s is needing participation from the community.

On Tuesday, September 20, Martin City Brewing Company debuted its gluten-free beer, Yoga Pants, in a can.

Rooms that Bloom, 13442 Cherry St., has received a new shipment of antique furniture selected by owner Krista Sloan from her annual visit to England in July. The items, which are found in the cottage behind Rooms that Bloom, include 19th Century teak trunks from India, a 19th Century French fruitwood farm table, an Irish pine dresser, as well as a variety of smaller items. Sloan opened the cottage to customers on Saturday, September 17.

Harry’s Tavern, named in honor of Harry Lukas, boasts 65 craft beers and 5 wines on tap. Canned crowlers, which are sealed on site, allow the customer to carry home draft beer. Bar food, such as nachos, hamburgers, bratwursts and street tacos is also available.

Officials praised the work and thanked the workers and patrons in the ribbon cutting celebration at 135th Street on Monday, October 24.

An October 24th ribbon cutting will celebrate the completion of Phase II, which began October 19 of last year. At 3:30 p.m. various local and state officials will help cut the ribbon in front of RC’s, 330 E 135 St. Community activities will proceed at 5 p.m. with pumpkin painting at Rosehill Gardens, a vintage car show at 200 E 135th St., and food trucks.
