Party on the Prairie
The KCMO Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a free Party on the Prairie featuring a
variety of family-friendly activities that will run from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 1, at Jerry
Smith Park in the Martin City area which contains KCMO’s only remaining remnant of the
original prairie vegetation that once covered much of the Midwest.
Activities will include a bird watching walk at 8 a.m., horse-drawn hay rides from 8 a.m. to
noon, guided prairie scavenger hunts and quick paint competition from 9 to 11 a.m., a 1.25-
mile prairie loop hike for adults and older children at 10 a.m. and a shorter accessible prairie
hike at 10:30 a.m.
There will be live music from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and free hot dogs, chips and water will be
available starting at 10 a.m.
Persons may access the park from Holmes Rd. by turning east on 139 th St. just south of the
bridge over the Blue River and going about three-fourths of a mile. The park will be on the left.
