South KC Perspective

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, the founders of Avila University, recently pledged $1 million to Avila in response to the many challenges Avila has faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This unexpected gift will not only make an immediate impact on the university, but help us live our mission of preparing lifelong learners who contribute to the global community in a meaningful way,” said Avila President Ron Slepitza.
Slepitza said for over a century Avila has provided opportunities for students to earn college degrees regardless of their financial means, and the $1 million pledge will assure this continues for many years.
More than 98 percent of Avila undergraduates receive scholarships, and nearly 50 percent are from low-income households and/or first generation college students. Over $6.4 million in scholarships and financial aid is awarded annually.
