What’s new for Hickman Mills Schools 2018-19

Hickman Mills Schools  

This year eight students will be participating in a new pilot program called the Prep-KC Cerner partnership.  Students interested in pursuing careers in STEM will attend half day at the Cerner campus. During their first semester they will receive college credit (at no cost to the student) in a Coding course. They will also learn more about different careers in STEM, project based learning, and how to work in a professional environment. During the second semester, students are eligible to apply for an internship at Cerner where they will be partnered with a project manager and work directly with Cerner employees. This program encourages careers in STEM and provides free college credit for a coding course and a possible internship.

St. Luke’s Crittendon Center will launch its Trauma Smart Program at Hickman Mills for pre-K through 6th grade classes. The program provides 20 hours of training throughout the year on skills needed to manage the impact of trauma and succeed in school and life.

New curriculum this year includes a K-3 reading curriculum – Collaborative Classroom Curriculum w/ social emotional components – and a K- 6 writing curriculum –  Collaborative Classroom Curriculum – Being a Writer.
