Artist Reception on Valentine’s Day

A 19-piece exhibit, entitled, “Observations/Reflections,” is on display at HJ’s Youth and Community Center, 6425 Wornall Rd from February 5 to March 30. An artist reception is scheduled for Friday, February 14th, from 5 -8 pm.  Open to the public, the reception will include light hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and the chance to meet painter, interior designer and self-taught fiber artist Susan Hill.

Inspired by the outdoors, Hill’s pieces are often drawn from stories, colors, and patterns found in her own backyard. This year marks Hill’s 45th year as a studio artist since moving to Kansas City in 1976. 

Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design from Kansas State University, Hill became a self-taught fiber artist in her mid-20’s. She describes her early art interests as very painterly. “My inspiration and passion are nature, more specifically my garden. I relish all stages of a plant’s life and the changes through the seasons. I draw from the colors, patterns, and juxtaposing textures offered in nature.” 

Hill’s art has been exhibited at nationally recognized art and craft fairs across the country including the Smithsonian Craft Fair in Washington D.C. and the Plaza Art Fair here in Kansas City. 

Looking back, Hill confides “As difficult a journey as it has been at times, I feel so lucky to have done something I have loved every day.”
