Community members gathered Thursday for a ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration at Mayfair Apartments at Woodbridge, located at 12940 Wornall Rd. The former nursing home and rehabilitation center was built in the early 1990s and closed in 2020. Following a brief period of blight, the property has been under renovation by IronDoor Management since 2024.
As IronDoor CEO Amin Rezvani snipped the ribbon, he said the project has been a long time coming. He also thanked his team for their hard work, noting that “bring-back-to-life” projects are much different from ground-up developments.
After the ribbon was snipped, attendees were also provided with tours of the fully-renovated model units at Mayfair Apartments. Members of the South KC Chamber of Commerce, prospective residents and members of the media explored the one-, two- and three-bedroom units.
Although the property was once dedicated to senior care, it’s clear that IronDoor Management is now aiming for younger residents. Rent for one-bedroom units starts at $875 with most utilities included. The property’s advertising boasts its proximity to Avila University and other amenities in Martin City, Leawood and Overland Park.
The building looks younger, too. Natural light pours into the main lobby through skylights in the ceiling. Gray walls are accented by bright-orange pipes. The orange motif reappears in various themed murals throughout the property. Among the themes are nautical, aviation, and space travel.
“Knowing its previous life as a senior care facility, I was really curious how they were redoing it to make it apartments,” commented Chamber president Rick Chambers. “This is nice.”
The property originally operated as a nursing home and rehabilitation center before closing in 2020. The property went through four different nursing home operations in four years and was cited multiple times for not complying with Medicare code, according to past Telegraph reporting.
An earlier redevelopment plan also fell through, causing the property to become an eyesore in recent years. IronDoor stepped in to clean up the property and turn it into rental apartments in 2024.
